Software piracy can take many forums, but one of the most common includes counterfeiting or a licensed user making duplicate copies of the software to sell or give away, with or without providing codes to unlicensed users as a workaround to anti-piracy features. Other piracy methods include violating a license by installing software software on multiple computers, software overuse on a network and students who purchase education versions of for family members or friends.
On the basis of software several types of software piracies are possible. They are :-
1) CD-R infringement :-
It is the illegal copying of software using CD-R recording technology.
2) Commercial use of non-commercial software's :-
Using educational or other commercial - use restricted software in violation of the software licence is a form of copyright infringement.
3) Counterfeiting :-
It is the duplication and sale of unauthorized copies of software in such a manner as to try to pass of the illegal copy as if it were a legitimate copy produced or authorized by the legal publisher. This is also often a violation of trade mark laws.
4) Hard-disk loading :-
It occurs when an individual or company sells computers preloaded with illegal copies of software.
5) Internet infringement :-
It is the illegal uploading of software on to the internet for anyone o copy.
6) OEM infringement/unbundling :-
Known as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) software is only legally sold with specified hardware. Whether misappropriating OEM Software constitutes copyright infringement is subject to interpretation - a software publisher would have a difficult time prosecuting a person who has successfully purchased a genuine OEM copy but who, according to the licence agreement would have been supposed to purchase a retail copy.
7) Softlifting :-
A person purchases a single licensed copy of a software programs and loaded it on several machines, in violation of the terms of the licence agreement.
8) Unrestricted client access infringement :-
It occurs when a copy of the software programs is copied onto an organization's servers and the organization's network "Clients" are allowed to freely access the software in violation of the term of the licence agreement.
9) Sharewares :-
Shareware publishers encourage users to give copies of programs to friends and colleagues but ask everyone who uses a programs regularly to pay a registration fee to the programmer's authors directly.
10) Wares :-
Commercial programs that are made available to the public illegally.
